Migrating to Australia from India: A Complete Guide

Migrating to Australia from India: A Complete Guide

Planning to migrate to Australia with your family? Here's a step-by-step guide to help you navigate through the immigration process smoothly.

Step 1: Select the Correct Visa Options

Before starting, ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria for one of the following GSM (General Skilled Migration) visas:

  • Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent Visa): No state nomination required; PR visa.
  • Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated Visa): Requires nomination from an Australian state/territory; PR visa.
  • Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional Visa): Requires nomination from a regional area; provisional visa leading to PR.

Note: It is mandatory to check the latest Skilled Occupation List (SOL) and verify if your occupation is listed under MLTSSL (Medium & Long-Term Strategic Skills List) or STSOL (Short-Term Skilled Occupation List). If you are planning to initiate your visa application via Subclass 190 or 491, it is advised to check the list of states inviting applications, as it changes frequently.

Step 2: Skill Assessment Process

The skills assessment confirms whether your education and work experience match Australian standards. Here’s a step-by-step process:

  • Identify your assessing authority: Different professions have different skill assessment authorities (e.g., Engineers Australia, ACS for IT, VETASSESS for multiple professions).
  • Gather required documents: Educational qualifications (mark sheets, transcripts, degrees). Employment proofs (Offer letters, Salary Slips, Experience Certificates, Bank Statements). Roles and responsibilities (should match Australian job descriptions). Proof of identity (Passport, Aadhaar, PAN, etc.).
  • Apply online on the respective skill assessment website (processing time of 8–12 weeks).

Note: When preparing your documents, please assure that if your employment lacks proper experience letters, make sure to get a statutory declaration* signed by a senior colleague to validate your experience. Additionally, ensure that all documents are attested and translated if they are not in English.

*The format and requirements may vary from case-to-case

Step 3: Appear for English Language Test (IELTS/PTE/TOEFL/CAE/OET)

You must prove your English proficiency for visa eligibility.

  • Choose the test: IELTS (General/Academic), PTE Academic, TOEFL*, CAE, or OET.
  • Prepare for at least 2–4 weeks (if required).
  • Take the test and obtain results (valid for 3 years).

*Note: As of May 5, 2024, the TOEFL iBT test is once again accepted for Australian visa applications. However, it's important to note that TOEFL iBT tests taken between July 26, 2023, and May 4, 2024, are not accepted for Australian visa and migration purposes.

Step 4: Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)

Upon receiving a positive skill assessment and English test results, you need to submit an EOI (Expression of Interest) through Australia’s SkillSelect portal.

Step-by-Step Process:

  • Enter details such as age, education, work experience, skills assessment, English test results, and any spouse skills.
  • Select the visa category (189, 190, or 491).
  • Choose state nominations (if applying for 190/491).
  • Submit EOI and wait for an invitation (EOI is valid for 2 years).

Step 5: State Nomination (For 190 & 491 Only)

If you’re applying for Subclass 190 or 491, you must apply separately for state nomination.

Steps to Apply:

  • Check the state nomination requirements (each state has its own rules).
  • Apply on the state’s website (processing time: 2–6 weeks).
  • Receive an invitation from the state (if successful).

When applying, there are a few minute details to take care of. Some states, such as South Australia, may require proof of residence or a job offer.

Step 6: Submit an Invitation to Apply (ITA)

If you get an invitation from SkillSelect, you must submit your visa application within 60 days.

Steps to Apply:

  • Gather all required documents: Birth certificates, Passports, Marriage Certificates, Educational Documents, and Work Experience proof. Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) for each country lived in for 6+ months. Proof of Medical Exam.
  • Apply online via ImmiAccount.
  • Pay the visa fee.
  • Receive a Visa.

Step 7: Visa Grant & Moving to Australia

Once the visa is approved, you’ll receive a Visa Grant Notice via email.

Steps After Visa Grant:

  • Check Initial Entry Date (must enter Australia before the mentioned deadline).
  • Plan relocation: Book flights (direct or with stopovers). Find temporary accommodation in Australia.
  • Open an Australian bank account (before arriving). Get a Tax File Number (TFN) after arrival. Apply for Medicare (if eligible for PR visas like 189/190).

Ensure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months before traveling. If you're bringing medicines, it's crucial to check Australia’s customs restrictions to avoid any issues. Additionally, research job opportunities before moving, as having a job offer can significantly help in settling down faster.
