Detailed Scenarios:

  • Short-Term Programs: If your program is 6 months or less, you don’t need a study permit. However, it’s a good idea to have one for flexibility.
  • Programs Not Hosted by DLIs: You may need to reapply as a visitor if you’re not attending a designated learning institution.
  • High School Exchange Programs: If it’s just one semester (less than 6 months), you don’t need a study permit.
  • University or College Programs: If the program is longer than 6 months, you need a study permit.
  • English/French as a Second Language Courses: Even if they’re short, consider a study permit if you plan to study further afterward.
  • Prerequisite Programs: If a short prerequisite is required for a more extended program, get a study permit for the prerequisite.
  • Leaving Canada Temporarily: If you leave Canada during your studies, you can return with a valid study permit.
  • Work While Studying: Check the conditions on your study permit for on-campus work eligibility.
  • Temporary Public Policy (from June 27, 2023, to June 27, 2026): Some work permit holders can study without a study permit, but it has conditions. If your studies go beyond your work permit or the policy’s end, you’ll need a study permit.
  • Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ): Workers in Québec can now study without a CAQ due to the new rules, which started on June 27, 2023.
  • Study Permit Holders: If you already have a study permit and a co-op work permit, you can explore additional study programs, following certain conditions.
