Canada Immigration Pathways and their Eligibility Requirements

Canada Immigration Pathways and their Eligibility Requirements

Canada has various immigration programs with different eligibility criteria. The eligibility requirements depend on the specific immigration program an individual is applying to. The blog provides an overview of the pathways through which generally skilled workers can immigrate to Canada and attain Canadian PR status. These pathways are:

Express Entry

Express Entry is an electronic system introduced by the Government of Canada in 2015 to manage immigration applications for three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). It is a highly popular and efficient pathway for skilled workers to obtain permanent resident (PR) status in Canada.

The Express Entry system operates on a points-based system known as the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) : The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is a pathway for skilled workers who possess the necessary qualifications and work experience to immigrate to Canada. To be eligible for the FSWP, candidates must meet specific criteria, including having at least one year of continuous full-time or equivalent part-time work experience in a skilled occupation, demonstrating proficiency in English or French, meeting minimum education requirements, and obtaining a minimum score on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) used in Express Entry. Successful applicants under the FSWP receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in Canada.
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC) : The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is for individuals who have gained work experience in Canada and wish to transition to permanent resident status. To be eligible for the CEC, candidates must have at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada within the past three years, meet the required language proficiency levels, and plan to reside outside the province of Quebec. Candidates under the CEC do not require a job offer to apply for permanent residence and can earn additional points in the Express Entry system based on their Canadian work experience. Successful CEC applicants receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) :   The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is tailored for skilled workers in specific trade occupations. To be eligible for the FSTP, candidates must have at least two years of full-time work experience (or equivalent part-time experience) in a skilled trade within the past five years, meet the required language proficiency levels, have a valid job offer of at least one year or a Certificate of Qualification in a skilled trade issued by a Canadian province or territory. Successful applicants under the FSTP receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in Canada.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are immigration programs established by individual provinces and territories in Canada. These programs allow provinces and territories to nominate individuals who possess the skills, experience, and qualifications needed to contribute to the local economy and society. The PNPs play a crucial role in the overall Canadian immigration system by supporting regional development and addressing specific labor market needs.

There are currently 9 provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador) and 2 territories (Yukon and Northwest Territories) that participate in the PNP.

PNPs offer a variety of immigration streams to cater to different categories of candidates. Some streams aligned with the federal Express Entry system, allowing candidates to be considered for both the provincial nomination and federal immigration programs simultaneously. Other streams may be specific to certain occupations, business investments, or international graduates from local educational institutions.

Family Sponsorship

In addition to the immigration pathway mentioned earlier, Canadian citizens and permanent residents have the opportunity to sponsor their close family members for immigration to Canada. This sponsorship program allows individuals to bring their spouses, partners, children, parents, and grandparents to join them in Canada.

To qualify as a sponsor, individuals must meet certain income requirements and demonstrate their ability to provide financial support to the sponsored family members. This requirement ensures that the sponsored individuals have the necessary financial resources to establish themselves in Canada and reduces the likelihood of them relying on social assistance programs upon their arrival.

Sponsors are responsible for meeting the basic needs of their sponsored family members, including providing them with housing, food, and other essential requirements during their initial period in Canada. The sponsorship program aims to reunite families and promote the well-being of sponsored individuals by enabling them to live with their loved ones in Canada.

Overall, Canada offers a range of immigration pathways to attract individuals with various skills and experiences who can contribute to the country’s economy and society.
