India Resumes Online Visa Processing for Canadian Tourists

India Resumes Online Visa Processing for Canadian Tourists

In a significant diplomatic development, the Indian government has officially reopened online visa processing for Canadian tourists after a two-month hiatus. This announcement brings relief to travelers eagerly awaiting the resumption of visa services.

The decision to resume visa processing comes two months after India halted the issuance of visas at its Canadian missions, affecting both Canadian citizens in India and those applying from abroad. The move had created uncertainties and concerns among travellers and travel agencies.

The Indian high commission in Ottawa confirmed the resumption of online visa services through a social media announcement on Wednesday. This positive shift is expected to have a considerable impact on travel plans, as Canadians can now once again apply for tourist visas to explore the diverse and culturally rich landscapes of India.

The visa suspension had been implemented amid diplomatic tensions between the two nations. In September, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed credible information linking the Indian government to the killing of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The 45-year-old was fatally shot outside a gurdwara in Surrey, B.C., prompting a strained relationship between the countries.

India’s concerns about Sikh separatist groups in Canada had long been a point of contention, leading to strained diplomatic ties. The recent easing of visa restrictions, including the resumption of business, medical, and conference visas, marked a gradual improvement in relations. However, the ban on tourist visas persisted until Wednesday’s announcement.

Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller expressed his satisfaction with the decision, emphasizing that the travel restrictions should not have been imposed in the first place. The reasons behind the initial visa suspension were cited by India as concerns for the safety of its diplomats in Canada.

Despite the tensions, both countries maintain strong defences and trade ties. The recent developments are seen as a positive step towards normalizing diplomatic relations and fostering increased people-to-people exchanges.

Travel agencies, such as Vancouver-based Explore India Journeys, are anticipating a surge in visa applications and travel bookings. Nazir Karnai, the president of Explore India Journeys, expressed relief at the news, stating that many clients were eagerly awaiting confirmation to proceed with their travel plans, particularly for winter weddings in India.

As the visa processing resumes, Canadian tourists are now encouraged to make their travel arrangements and explore the vibrant cultural experiences that India has to offer. The reopening of tourist visas is seen as a positive signal for the broader improvement of diplomatic relations between Canada and India.
