Canada’s new passport design includes modern security elements

Canada’s new passport design includes modern security elements

One of the strongest and most prestigious travel documents in the world is the Canadian passport. Some people utilize it to have adventures, go on exploration trips, and get in touch with loved ones. Others complete their immigration process by becoming citizens of Canada, joining a diverse and inclusive community that upholds the principles of democracy, freedom, and human rights.

The new Canadian passport was proudly unveiled by the Honourable Karina Gould, minister of Families, Children, and Social Development, and the Honourable Sean Fraser, minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship. With brand-new artwork and cutting-edge security measures throughout, the new passport will continue to serve as one of the safest and most widely used forms of identification for all Canadians.

Modern security measures in the new passport, such as a polycarbonate data page—a technology resembling that used in Canadian driver’s licenses—are intended to protect Canadians’ identity. Instead of being printed with ink, personal data on passport holders will now be laser etched, making the data page more robust and impervious to forging and tampering. Additionally, a Kinegram will appear above the primary photo, a second portrait will be seen through a custom see-through window, a laser image will be variable, and ink will be temperature-sensitive.

Using famous photographs of Canada’s natural beauty in all four seasons, the new passport honors the country’s history and identity. The first big update in decades also features a brand-new cover image with the outline of a maple leaf. Beginning later this summer, the new passport will be issued. Canadians who now possess valid passports only need to get them renewed when it is almost time for their regular renewal date because the present passport is still secure and trustworthy. They’ll provide you with more information on the rollout later.

The Canadian government has also been attempting to provide additional online service options for citizens. Beginning later this autumn, Canadians will be able to renew their passports, pay their costs, and simply upload their photos online.

The new Canadian passport features

In order to further protect your identity, they completely redesigned the Canadian passport and implemented a number of new security measures.

The fresh passport, they

  • Added pictures of Canada’s people, landscapes, and wildlife that can only be seen in UV light;
  • Revised the visa pages to highlight the country’s natural splendor; and
  • Revamped the cover.

When you apply, you can receive the new or the old version. You don’t need to renew your passport early to make sure it will be recognized as a valid travel document because both versions are safe and dependable.

New security features and works of art

Within the front cover

To increase the security of your passport, they’ve incorporated a number of new security features, such as:

  • A fresh, impenetrable data page.
  • Maple leaf-shaped metallic foils on the covers
  • A maple leaf debossed on the back

They’ve added color-shifting ink in the form of a deer and a snowfall to the inside of the front cover, and on the opposite page, they’ve included a clear passport chip and antenna. You can use these features to verify the validity of your passport and safeguard your information.

The page with personal information

They’ve included a kine gram that, depending on your perspective, appears to move and change colors. On the same page, there is a picture of you and your birthdate that, depending on how you look at it, changes appearance.

In comparison to earlier, the page containing your personal information is now constructed of polycarbonate, which will stay longer and resist water damage. Additionally, rather than being printed ink on the page, your personal information is now laser-engraved.

A journey across the seasons

Your visa pages include seasonal artwork that shifts when viewed under UV light. View the samples below to see how the artwork changes and other security measures manifest.

Brief facts

  • To design, create, and roll out the next generation of Canadian passports and travel papers, the Canadian Bank Note Company was given a 14-year contract by the Canadian government in 2019.
  • The Canadian passport ranks fourth globally on the Passport Index, providing holders visa-free access or visa on arrival to more than 170 countries (as of April 2023). Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada have collaborated with the Canadian Bank Note Company for the majority of the past century.
  • The current passport was introduced in 2013, and to better identify efforts at tampering, the electronic passport chip is now inserted in a transparent window on page one of the new polycarbonate data sheet. The Commonwealth’s first country to release a series of travel documents featuring His Majesty King Charles III is Canada.
  • The former coat of arms is printed on the new passport. The new passport’s design and production have been underway for several years, starting even before His Majesty King Charles III accepted the new coat of arms in April 2023.

Canadians can now view the status of their passport applications online due to the introduction of a new online passport application status checker on March 21, 2023.
